pushchair options explained

It's not surprising parents-to-be and new parents get a little confused when it's time to pick a pushchair for their baby. Should they get a travel system, pram or stroller? What about a three-wheeler, forward or rear-facing pushchair? With so much to choose from, read up on what each pushchair option means, to help you work out which one suits your family life best.

prams & pushchairs

Pram and pushchair systems are usually suitable for newborns to toddlers. They are very versatile and usually foldable to make travelling with your baby a bit easier. Prams typically have a lie-flat position suitable for newborns, whilst pushchairs have a reclining, forward-facing seat more suitable for toddlers.

Models vary in features, but there is such a selection of prams and pushchairs, Mothercare has something suitable for all needs and budgets.

Various features of prams and pushchairs include:

  • Several models have different lie-back positions, with some being lay-flat options
  • Reversible seat units, allowing for both forward and rear facing options
  • Foldable for easy transportation
  • Prams and pushchairs with fixed or lockable swivel wheels
  • Will stand up unaided when folded
  • Shopping tray or other storage
  • Addition of infant carrier on some pushchair travel systems
  • Bumper bars

strollers & buggies

Strollers and buggies tend to be light in weight making them ideal for hopping on and off public transport, in and out of a car or for taking with you on holiday. Strollers often have an umbrella folding mechanism so they're compact when folded. Many feature a fully reclining seat for newborns however some are only suitable for children aged three or six months of age. As a rule strollers are good value for money and should last you a good few years. Full-swivel wheels will offer good manoeuvrability, although pneumatic tyres are better if you're planning long country walks.

Many parents switch to strollers when their little ones get a bit older and don't sleep much in the buggy. They are also ideal as a 'second' buggy, to keep for when you need an easy-to-fold option or you want to keep one at the Grandparents house.

Common features:

  • Lightweight design, ideal for out and about
  • Compact fold, easy to store and transport
  • Easily manoeuvrable
  • Good value for money

complete travel systems

Complete travel systems come with an infant carrier (car seat) that attaches securely to the conventional pushchair base. This way they can be used from birth with both the car seat attached to the pushchair base, or as a carrycot pram. This can be really handy if you want to transport a sleeping baby from the car to the buggy without waking him up. Travel systems are usually a bit pricier than buying a pushchair, but at least you won't be buying a separate car seat.

Complete travel systems feature:

  • A pushchair and infant carrier. The infant carrier detaches from the pushchair to be used in the car as well
  • Reversible seat units, allowing for both forward and rear facing options
  • Some have 'one-hand' foldable options
  • Frames with suspension or air tyres
  • Many travel systems have co-ordinating accessories
  • Some travel systems also include a carry cot that transforms the pushchair into a pram with a lie flat position

3 wheeler & 4 wheeler pushchairs

3 Wheeler pushchairs are often seen as the more stylish option, suited to parents who take the buggy out on all sorts of terrain (some 3 wheelers have tyres suitable for the beach or the countryside) or who want to jog with their baby. Whilst 4 wheelers are the more traditional pushchair, some models have tyres suitable for all-terrains too.

Features of 3 wheeler pushchairs:

  • Stylish, sporty looks
  • Some models include an infant carrier(car seat) to form a travel system
  • Some models include a carry cot to allow your baby to lie flat and face you
  • Many 3 wheeler pushchairs come with hoods, footmuffs and basket
  • Some benefit from quick release wheels and pneumatic tyres
  • Most fold flat for easy storage

Features of 4 wheeler pushchairs:

  • Much more traditional in appearance
  • More stable to push
  • Many have footmuffs, weathershields and more accessories

Mothercare have an extensive range of 3 wheeler pushchairs and 4 wheeler pushchairs with an option for all budgets.

double and tandem pushchairs

Double and tandem pushchairs are suitable for families with more than one child. Tandem pushchairs are suitable for children of similar age, where the children sit side-by-side. Double pushchairs usually have one fully reclining seat suitable for newborns, whilst the other seat would be forward facing suitable for toddlers. There are lots of different options with double and tandem buggies; you'll almost certainly find one that fits with the age of your children. It is also possible to buy a tandem buggy with only one seat (if this is your first baby), with the option to buy the second seat if and when you have another child.

Tandem pushchair features include:

  • Forward facing tandem seats with individual adjustment
  • Suitable for two children of different ages
  • Rear seat reclines fully for a newborn baby
  • Some models have an optional infant carrier (car seat)
  • Makes it harder for toddler to interfere with baby

Double pushchairs features include:

  • Side by side seats with individual adjustment
  • More stable to push
  • Many have footmuffs, weathershields and more accessories

Mothercare have an extensive range of double and tandem pushchairs.
