the ultimate baby checklist – what to buy
everything you’ll need for your newborn
Whether you’re prepping the nursery or just starting to nest, we’ve put together a handy checklist to help you feel calm, confident, and ready to welcome your baby into the world. You won’t need everything at once, just the things that’ll support you and baby in those early weeks and months.
sleep essentials
- moses basket, crib or cot with a firm, flat mattress
- 2–4 fitted sheets
- 2–3 light blankets or baby sleep bags (check tog rating)
- baby monitor (audio or video)
- room thermometer (ideal temp: 16–20°c)
- night light (helpful for night feeds)
safe sleep tip: keep baby’s sleep space clear - no loose bedding, pillows, or soft toys
feeding essentials
- 6–8 bottles and newborn teats (if formula feeding or expressing)
- steriliser (steam, microwave, UV, or cold water)
- formula milk (if not breastfeeding)
- bottle brush
- milk storage bags/containers
- breast pump (manual or electric, optional)
- muslin cloths
- bibs or soft feeding cloths
- feeding cushion (optional but comfy)
- formula dispenser (optional but handy for feeds on-the-go)
clothing (0–3 months)
- 6–8 bodysuits/vests (short or long sleeve)
- 6–8 sleepsuits (with built-in mitts are a plus)
- 2-3 cardigans or jumpers
- hats (1 cotton for indoors, 1 for outdoors)
- 4–6 pairs of socks or booties
- scratch mittens (if not built into sleepsuits)
- 3-4 pairs of pyjamas
- something a bit special for first adventures
Don’t forget: comfort is key. Soft fabrics, easy fastenings, and gentle layers make all the difference in those early days.
changing and toiletries
- wipes or cotton wool and water
- changing mat
- nappy sacks/bin
- baby bath or bath support
- 2-3 soft baby towels
- gentle baby wash/shampoo (unfragranced)
- flannels/wash mitt/sponge
- soft hairbrush
- baby nail scissors or file
- digital thermometer
It’s all about keeping things gentle, simple, and soothing. With a little preparation, you’ll have everything to hand for those daily care moments.
out and about
- car seat (rear-facing and properly fitted)
- pushchair/pram/travel system
- changing bag
- portable changing mat
- baby carrier or sling (optional but hands-free)
When you’ve got everything you need, you can focus on what really matters - enjoying those moments together.
play and development
- soft toys - for early cuddles (check age guidance)
- sensory toys or rattles - encourage fine motor skills
- tummy time mat or play gym - to help build strength and coordination
- black and white or high-contrast toys – for visual development
- musical toys – to calm and comfort
- play gym/activity mat – to stimulate senses and encourage movement
- cot mobile – for visual stimulation and relaxation
- books and soft books – to encourage curiosity
Play helps your baby learn, develop, grow and discover the world around them.

- maternity/nursing bras or vests
- nipple cream
- maternity pads
- big comfy underwear
- water bottle and insulated cup
- healthy snacks for night feeds
